Kia ora koutou katoa,
Currently the Porirua Whanau Centre's Early Childhood Centre is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
We will provide regular updates and information as it is provided by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. It is also our intention to keep whanau updated, informed and provide numerous other activities that will assist with our childcare during this period.
Nga mihi and stay safe
Level 3 Restrictions
The Porirua Whanau Centre’s top priority is the health and well-being of tamariki and staff attending our childcare. After assessing the needs of our whanau within our childcare against the “golden rules of level 3” and guidelines provided by the New Zealand Government we made the decision that we will not be opening under Level 3 at this stage.
It is important as the Prime Minister has said that we “keep the gains we have made so far” and we stand by the government.
However, if you do need your child to attend childcare because there is no one at home to watch your child while you are at work then please fill in the form below. If we see there is a need for our childcare to be open under level 3, we will re reassess our decision and advice. Our Kaiako will be posting videos and resources to this page so please keep an eye on new developments.

Porirua Whanau Centre offers a licensed Early Childhood Education (ECE) Centre that follows NZ Te Whariki, the Ministry of
Education’s Early Childhood curriculum, and endorses Ka Hikita, the Maori Education Strategy.
We are multi-cultural, speaking English, Maori and Samoan. Our children learn problem solving, science, music, drama, art, pre-reading, language skills and social skills – all while having fun and being well cared for by experienced, qualified ECE teachers who have a passion for early learning education.
Our childcare facilities are open from 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday, all year round excluding statutory holidays and two weeks over the Christmas period.
We cater to children from 6 months to 5 years old. The hourly rate is $4.60, but children aged three and four are eligible for 20 hours free care per week as a government subsidy.
We also provide a free pick up and drop off service. For more information please contact reception on 04 237 7749.
